Having graduated with a BFA in Illustration and a BS in Genetics and Biotechnology, I'm living the dream of someone pulled between love for art and love for science. I worked in a plant genetics lab for 5 years studying tomato spotted wilt virus and the phylogeny of penstemon wildflowers. Concurrently, I took on many commissions for murals and oil portraits. After the birth of my first child, I moved on to graphic design, working with both small businesses and universities. My guilty pleasure during this time was helping grad students by providing images for theses. This satisfied my thrill for scientific discovery. I also enjoyed teaching private art lessons and had dozens of art students. Seven years of freelancing and teaching taught me how to work with diverse clients to achieve a level of excellency. I could see that opportunities to work with a team long-term would be greater as part of a company, and that's when I started working at 10x Genomics. As a technical illustrator, I get to work closely with R&D and appreciate the science. I get to use my artistic abilities to explain and teach others about that science. I get the satisfaction of working with a team on ambitious projects. My life and work experience have brought me to a career that I find rewarding and enduring.
